Águas do Algarve, S.A will very shortly reduce the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere by about 1,129 tons/year.

The initiative for the micro-production of green electricity from Algarve Multi-municipal Water Supply and Sanitation Systems is an addition to the main activity assigned to Águas do Algarve, S.A and which complies with the objectives that Portugal proposed to fulfil by signing the Kyoto Protocol (the Kyoto protocol is the most important document in the fight against climatic alterations, which includes the commitment assumed by the majority of the industrialised countries to reduce by an average of 5% their emissions of certain gases with a greenhouse effect responsible for global overheating). It also complies with the strategic objectives recommended in PEASSAR II (2007-2013), with regard to the technology Plan, where the diversification of energy sources through using renewable energy is considered one of the most relevant measures to adopt.
Production of photovoltaic electricity

Águas do Algarve S.A. owns 55 facilities equipped with photovoltaic electricity production units for sale to the public electricity network, from which we underline some values indicating its behaviour between the respective connection date and June 2009, 45 of which were then operating:

In general, about 104,685 kWh were produced, representing an income of 68,045.25€ and avoiding the emission of 49.2 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere for now.
Seeing that the cost incurred by the distributor with regard to energy consumed at the facilities corresponds to 46,320.59€ during this period, it is obvious that the balance is positive, that is, the income from energy produced, in addition to reducing electricity costs at the afore-mentioned facilities, also registered a profit of around 21,724.66 €, which clearly benefits the environment.
